Hysterical. I left the shores in Flekke in six years ago. The alcohol debate raged for the whole time I was there. It's still going. This immediately illustrates two things to me: rcnuwc administration and management is still flawed as ever. Time is still being wasted on this. (However, perhaps you could argue that there is some intrinsic merit in the debate process itself? Maybe this is why it's allowed to perpetuate as each new year group arrives in?) Secondly: as the wss says - people will always continue to drink. Unless you introduce truely unpleasant and draconian measures. And why would you want to do that?
Hahaha believe it or not - according to the grand scrudge himself Andreas Bakerrud - bananas are the cheapest fruit in England!
Anyhow, I am actually curios with what kind of thing they'll come up this time, will they actually have more/again of those "trust has been broken" speeches by John? That usually leaves 99 % of the auditorium feeling ridiculous - we drink, they know we do, and we both know it won't just end. But, it must be said to preserve... wait a second. To preserve what? A notion of system? Never got that one.
Still those speeches are/were major jokes, even though one when Summer had a heart-breaking speech about drinking with the knowledge that her daughter is the worst one was slightly better IMO.X
It is amazing how much discussion this issue can create, even from the people who has left the college. I must admit that the best proposal that ever was made (the one that 70% or so voted yes to), is the best solution. It was actually a proposal that both a majority of teachers and students supported. However, we cannot forget the mighty Leader and his fear for "the media" and "the board". At Mahindra college most of the students drinks and also smoke things that are stronger than cig's, even at the "hard" LPC they drink quite a lot... So, the "liberal and nordic" college is actually one of the more tough places to be. I sometimes wonder if it was smart to start a college in Costa Rica and Serbia when RCN is still a big mess. The last couple of years teachers has left the college with a bad feeling, and student democracy has been limited....
Nevertheless, in the end... We had the time of our Life even though some people tried to destroy it. Alcohol was just a tiny little part of it, however, a part that lead to frustration.
Btw, it would be nice if all the "anonymous" could write a name or year....
I am a physics teacher at the Red Cross Nordic United World College on the West coast of Norway. I spend most of my free time bouldering and most of my work time working.
I have written two physics books published by Pearson and have designed a couple of websites.

oh, and that's not necessarily what I hold as a belief - it is actually a common perception of UWC in general... Which makes me rather sad...

A poor teacher complains, an average teacher explains, a good teacher teaches, a great teacher inspires.
