So what happened?

Just got back from a weeks climbing in Spain. I see there are a few commets on my last post. Looks like I'm going to have to expand a bit. But first I'm going to get some sleep.
OK, so here we go. I suppose it was to be expected that the board could not agree to all that was going on, the storage of alcohol and handing it out is illegal and since the school administration knew about it then they are sort of responsible. What was happening before (storing in roooms) was also illegal but no one knew about it so that was ok, haha.
The thing that gets me most is the way that some peoples opinion swing with the tide.
At the begiinning of term the whole idea did not get much support.
When it worked fine suddenly people think it's a good idea.
The board dissaprove, people are so glad that we no longer have to live with this bad situation.
Uh!
So, things can't continue as they were.
The institution can not have anything to do with alcohol consumption.
So it's up to the students.
We have had a good term, we have seen what is possible, now you just have to get on with it.
Good things to continue with:
Keep alcohol out of the rooms.
Enjoy your parties in Flekke.
Look after people when they are drunk.
Don't disturb students on campus when you return after a party.

The Natt Ugle thing is probably ok still but I'm not sure.

It's not pleasant when you think you've done something good and you end up being told off about it.

It's like a kid has just made a birthday cake for his mum. He's waiting in the kitchen thinking about how pleased his mum will be when she sees the cake he's made. Mum walks in ans scolds the little boy for all the mess.

jokes... But now that I am gone it actually all looks funny, at some points you must ponder who is immature - some students or some staff?

It does look funny, and it is the staff as much as the students. the farther removed you become, the more you realise that this weird Lord of the Flies insular place is both disturbing and self-perpetuatingly self-fooling. As much as any religion, it is about shielding from the outside and inventing its own dilemas and intrigues. This avoids dealing with anything really real.
Why should the staff not be immature? Many students have more life experinec than they do...

I can't but make this comment.

I must point out that if the current policy is suspended the trust will be broken, yet again. I do remember my first year when our second years told us to drink into oblivion and not care, as the students were, i am citing "betrayed" by the staff. The rest as they say is history, and we know it was not pleasant or progressive one.

When I made this point on a house meeting last year in Norway house I got threatened by Kare that I should keep my mouth shut. And yes, I do came to realise how many people wanted me expelled out of RCN. But, this whole ranting is not about me, it is about the fact that if the dry alcohol campus policy is made again problems will persist until, and I am deeply in grief to say this, somebody drowns/dies of alcohol poisoning/get in severe condition. And the staff will be responsible for that in firstly moral and then other ways.

Anyhow, take care of what you do and enjoy Christmas and New Year.

well, i'm sure what is Chris said it's reasonal enought to comprehen and I agree. It is really hard to make our own college policy against the law, so how are going to dealt with it? but well, try to find a good way to do it anyway.

Hey!

Chris, this comment is totally on another topic. I post it here, because i didn't really find any other way to contact you.

The thing is that we'll most probably going to Font in march. And since u have been there, i wonder what if u could recommend some areas/topos/problems/campings/anything else. None of us has never been there, but we'll have 10 days and a car. If things go like planned..

All the info you can send will be very much appreciated! You can reach me from samuli.sinisalo(NOSPAM)@luukku.com
Thank you very much!!

I must tell you this:
I never broke a rule of residential charter or any other charter when in Flekke - except once as I did homework in someone else's room till 22:40 - ten minutes too long.(!!) I took it seriously the first year, and the other year. I think I didn't cause problems to my roommates or any other person on campus.

Knowing that I obeyed with discipline gave some satisfaction - and at the same time the adjectives that described me in uni applications were exactly the same as for those who opposed the rules (active and energetic indeed means many things). If the college really wants to get rid of drinking, the best way to do it is to reject writing recommendation letters. But again, I had a great time with some drunk people growing up that way. I think problems are part of the paradise bubble, too.
